PresidentRyan Ross
Hello everyone!
My name is Ryan, I am a fourth year Aeronautical Engineering student and will be President of the society this coming year. I joined GUBLDS two years ago, with no prior experience of Ballroom Dancing, and instantly felt at home due to the open and welcoming atmosphere in the society. There was absolutely no pressure and it was a great place to learn a new skill and make new friends. I quickly learned lots about Ballroom and Latin Dancing from the excellent volunteer teachers and have developed a real passion for dancing. It is a really good way to relax, away from the stress of studying. Going to classes really takes your mind of things as you are too busy thinking about the music, your partner and what your feet are supposed to be doing. Having been a member for a couple of years and having gained so much from my experiences at the society, I felt I wanted to give something back. I am honoured to have been elected as President and to have the opportunity to take the society forward, introduce exciting new events and experiences and maintain the friendly atmosphere. Along with the other dedicated board members that have been elected this year, I am extremely confident that this will be another great year for the society. I cannot recommend ballroom dancing enough and would encourage anyone, from freshers to post-graduates, to come along and try it out! |
Vice PresidentLucy Robson
Hello!!
I’m Lucy! I’m a fourth year history student originally from the North East of England, #proud. I started ballroom in first year and fell in love. So last year I decided to put myself forward to be the Vice President of the Ballroom Dancing and Latin Society here at Glasgow, and ta dahh, here I am! I’m not the best dancer and I do still get scared when starting to learn a new dance. But since first year my confidence has grown so much because of the incredible dancing family we have, and it is wonderful to be a part of a society who laughs with you when you fall over your own feet trying to do a box step in the Waltz. As you Vice President it is my job to support my fellow board members, but I want it to be more than that. I will try my very best to support the whole society, and each dancer, whether they come for one class (and then run away), one semester, one year, or the rest of their time here at Glasgow! Don’t be afraid to try, and remember.... Keeeeep dancing!! |
SecretaryIan Wilson
Hey, my name is Ian and I’m the secretary for this year.
I’m a second-year medic and only started ballroom halfway through last year joining up in the second term so am a complete beginner but really enjoy it as its very relaxed but you still pick up a new skill as you go along. The teaching levels are always excellent and there are a lot of social events that the board helps to host so it’s a nice community that you learn alongside with everyone being very welcoming of beginners and experts alike. As secretary, it’s my job to just help make sure everything is running smoothly as well as keeping a list of the members so I’ll hopefully get to know you all. If you’re still not sure about joining then just come along to a taster session and I know that the board and members will easily win you over |
PR & Events CoordinatorAmy Jarvie
Hello everyone!
I’m Amy, and I’m a third year accounting student, and I am your PR and events coordinator for the society this year. I joined GUBLDS two years ago, in my first year, as a complete beginner having never done any kind of dance class before. The atmosphere in the class made me feel so comfortable and everyone is so supportive and willing to help you when you are finding something difficult. I cannot recommend the classes enough to anyone thinking of taking up dancing, regardless of your current skill level. My role this year is to organise lots of fun social events like our two annual balls as well as other more casual socials, to give all you lovely dancers a chance to show off what you’ve been learning in class, as well as to meet and get to know other people who share an interest in Ballroom and Latin dancing. I hope to see you in classes soon! |
Team Captain & TREASURERNatalie Rawlinson
Hi everyone!
I'm back for my second year on the GUBLDS board, this time I've took on a bit more work - two roles to be exact!! I joined the society 2 years ago now having danced and competed since I was 4 years old. Ballroom and Latin dancing has always been such a big part of my life that I knew I had to carry it on while at university. Joining the society in my second year was an amazing decision and I've met some really amazing people and can safely say that the 4 hours a week we have classes are what i look forward to! Firstly, I will be treasurer for the society. Being a 4th year maths and statistics student, your money is in good hands. I will keep society finances happy and healthy and aim to use your money wisely for all members enjoyment and benefit (with approval from the rest of the board of course!) Secondly, but not less importantly, I will be team captain again - please speak to me if you are interested in competing it's really not as scary as it sounds, we will find you a partner if needed and there will be a lot of help available to you if you are interested! This year there will also more insight to what a competition looks like and how they are run so you will be aware before you get to your first one. Competing is a lot of fun, we travel as a team and are all there to support each other, there may even be a few drinks involved if that's what will sway you.. I can't wait to see you all at classes! |
Performance CoordinatorRyan McLean
Hello dancers!
I'm Ryan, your new performance coordinator for the year and I will also be overlooking the social media stuff and any business things related to the society. I currently attend college and I'm going into my HND 2nd year of business (equivalent to 2nd year of university) which makes me the first ever non-UofG student member to be on the GUBLDS board, but it doesn't stop me from getting to classes - so if I can do it, so can you! I started dancing in the middle of 2016 privately and a month later I joined GUBLDS for the first time and I was surprised to see so many dancers in the one room so I knew it was going to be a great year! The teachers and previous board members were all super friendly and non intimidating plus I met some amazing people whilst learning new moves which made it easier for me to decide to be on the board this year! I will be the heart of the society, I am in charge of classes, music, workshops, teachers and much more! I want to keep the friendly environment the society has but also want to bring out the sense of achievement you will get from each class. So far I have already introduced 2 new dances; Rumba & Viennese Waltz so expect even more surprises from me! That's it for now and I hope to see you at classes, Au Revoir! P.S - the picture of me is from a competition we go to every-year, you should come too ;) |
