Hi there! I’m Eda - I just finished my third year in medicine and I’m doing an intercalated degree in ENT Surgery this year. This is my fourth year in the society and third year in the committee. I guess this tells you a lot about how much I enjoy being a part of GUBLDS! After being the secretary for two years, I’ll be taking over as the president for this year. My role is to make sure that everything is running smoothly and everyone is getting the most out of their involvement in our society.
I joined GUBLDS a few weeks into my first year at university - since then, I’ve met great people, competed in several competitions (they’ve definitely been a few of the best weekends) and had the most fun in classes, socials and of course - spring and winter balls. After a difficult year, I’m very excited to get back to in-person classes!
One of the best things about this society is definitely the people - everyone is always so supportive of each other! We welcome everyone regardless of their dance level - anyone from complete beginner to experienced dancer has a place in our friendly society. I’m sure anyone can find something they enjoy here. If you want casual fun dance classes followed by socials or if you prefer adding some more focused training for competitions - we’re here to support you!
I can’t wait to meet all the fellow dancers this year and hope to see you there!
Vice President and Treasurer - Rachel Aschaber
Hey everyone! I'm Rachel and I'm going into my third year of Sociology at GU. I joined the society in first year and even went to Blackpool to compete for a really fun competition weekend. Last year I was the treasurer for the society and this year I'm excited to take on the role of Vice President too. I'll be taking care of membership and competition fees as well as room bookings, general planning and assisting Eda in leading the society. GUBLDS is a really friendly, relaxed society and we have a lot of fun! If you fancy learning a new skill or finding a place to continue dancing, we would love to welcome you to the group!
After a year without in-person dancing and social events, we have a lot to catch up on come September! See you then!
Secretary - Jasmine Brown
Hi! I'm Jasmine and I'm a 4th year Marine and Freshwater biology student! I'm really looking forward to being secretary this year, and continuing on the board, so we can work to bring back the classes and socials everyone loves. I joined the society in 2nd year as a beginner and absolutely loved it, everyone was so welcoming and encouraging, it was just a lovely atmosphere! Even as a beginner the competitions were some of the best times at uni so there is something for everyone! I recommend to everyone to give it a go and hope to see you in September!
Team Captain - Gordon McNicol
Hello! I’m Gordon, a maths PhD student at the University and I’m serving as your Team Captain again this year. This means that I’ll be your point of contact for anything competition related, including helping you find a partner and organising Society trips around the country to competitions.
There’s a place for everyone on our competition team regardless of experience, and much of our team started competing within weeks of joining the society (including myself) without ever dancing before. The competitions themselves are great fun and brilliant bonding experiences – especially knowing that when you head onto the dance floor the whole Glasgow Team will be cheering right behind you!
Our team is thriving and bigger than ever before and so if you are interested in joining, or have any questions about it, please come speak to me during class or send a message to the society Facebook page. After a tough year with very little dancing, I hope you’re as keen as I am to get back onto the dance floor.
Vice Team Captain - Jacob Skipper
Teaching and Performance Coordinator - Daniel Kelly
Hi everyone I’m Daniel, originally from Russia; I’m a physics PhD student at Glasgow Uni and I’m excited to be your Teaching and Performance coordinator! My role will be to ensure the routines are ready for all the beginners, as well as liaising with our professional teachers, Bas and Jen (our professional teachers) regarding lessons at all levels.
See you all on the dance floor!
PR & Events Coordinator - Mara Perras
Hiya! I'm Mara and I'm going into my third year studying medicine at Glasgow. I joined the society during my very first weeks at uni and am really looking forward to contributing as your PR and Events coordinator this year!
I'm sure everyone is just as excited to get back onto the dance floor and see some familiar and new faces in person! (the days if zoom dance classes are over! Hopefully.) To help everyone get back to grips with the reality of interacting with real life people, I'm planning a variety of socials over this next year: everything from a casual evening at the pub or Sunday tea dance to our legendary winter and spring balls (well, maybe they don't have legendary status yet, but you can bet that they will be after this year). I'm also hoping to involve the wider community and maybe some other universities, if possible (lofty goals with covid still around, but who knows!). That would be the PR part of my job. I'm probably the newest member of the committee, but I'm going to try my hardest to make this year a fun one for all of you! Hope to see many new faces on the dance floor this year!
