Jasmine Brown - President
Hi everyone! I’m Jasmine, I’m going into my third year as a Marine and Freshwater biology student and I’m really looking forward to being your president for the upcoming year.
I joined the society last year and loved how welcoming and friendly everyone was. I had been looking for a dance society for a while as I had done ballet for a long time before uni and the Ballroom and Latin society was a perfect fit! I had no previous Ballroom and Latin dancing experience so it was really fun learning something new whilst continuing to dance. The teachers are so good and everyone offers amazing support that after 6 weeks of learning to dance I was able to go to a competition! The classes are also a great way to take your mind off uni and any other stresses and just have fun. It’s good exercise without even realising it and social at the same time.
I’m really looking forward to being president this year as I have made so many great friends and memories and can’t wait for many more people to experience the same!

Ann-Cathrin Reissmann - Vice President
Hello! My name is Ann-Cathrin, I’m a 5th year Civil Engineering student and I’ll be the vice president for this year.
I started dancing back in 2014 and have been hooked ever since. For me, Ballroom and Latin dancing is my way to let go of any worries and just have fun for a few hours each week! I joined GUBLDS in my first week at uni and even though I have had to take breaks here and there, I always came back because I love the friendly atmosphere and the supportive spirit within the society. So far, I have stayed strictly on the social side of dancing, but the goal for my last year of uni is to venture over to the competition side of things as well.
As an avid sock dancer (yes, you can absolutely dance in socks and yes, it took me 6 years to finally buy my first pair of Latin heels) I can assure you that regardless of whether you just want to casually try out dancing or are set on competing as quickly as possible, you will enjoy dancing with us!
I’m looking forward to hopefully welcoming you all back soon!

Gordon McNicol - Team Captain
Hello! I’m Gordon, I’m just starting my PhD in maths at the University and I’m very excited to be back this year to serve as your Team Captain.
My first experience of ballroom and latin dancing was when I joined GUBLDS two years ago and within six weeks I went to my first competition and loved it. Competing has been one of the highlights of my time at University, they’re such fantastic, memorable (and slightly bizarre) events. The year culminates in what is my favourite competition - the IVDC in Blackpool where we get to dance in the stunning Winter Gardens. The competitions are also a great bonding experience, although it can be daunting heading out to the dancefloor for the first time you know you’ll have the whole Glasgow Team behind you, cheering you on!
It’s my job to encourage you to join our thriving competition team, to help you find a partner and to organise our Society’s trips to the competitions. If you think competing is something that might interest you, whether you’ve only just started dancing or danced your entire life, come speak to me and I’ll do my best to help you out. I can guarantee if you do compete that you’ll have a ball...

Lauren Findlay - Vice Team Captain
Hi everyone! I’m Lauren, a games software development student, and this year I’m very excited to be on the board in the new position of vice team captain!
I first joined the society in my first year of uni back in 2015, having set myself the goal of taking up something new at the same time a friend got me hooked on Strictly Come Dancing - it seemed like the logical choice, and the society hasn’t been able to get rid of me ever since! I finally attended my first competition in 2018 after a great deal of convincing, and wish I’d decided to take it up sooner. The atmosphere is incredible every time, and being part of the team is such a wonderful experience to get involved with - it made an already enjoyable society even better and more special!
As vice team captain I’m here to encourage you to give competing a shot, and I’m ready to answer any questions you might have - or even just to tell you some wild stories from past competitions! I’m also always happy to help with any more general dance or society related questions you may have, and if I don’t have the answers I’m certain I’ll be able to point you towards someone who will!
Looking forwards to hopefully seeing you all out on the dancefloor soon!

Eda Lyuman - Secretary
Hello! I’m Eda, I’m going into my third year as a medical student and I will be the society’s secretary, keeping this position for my second year in the committee.
I joined the society not long after I attended the taster sessions in my first year of university and I have been enjoying dancing and socialising since. I had a little bit of experience in Latin dancing as a child so I wanted to pick it up again after so many years and this was one of the best decisions I made at uni! I have competed in several competitions for two years, which were undoubtedly a few of the best memories I have. I can’t recommend joining this society enough, everyone is always very welcoming and supportive of each other! I’m sure you will make great friends and have so much fun through the classes, socials, balls and competitions. Definitely worth giving it a go and I hope to see you this year!

Rachel Aschaber - Treasurer
Hello everyone! My name's Rachel and I'll be the society's treasurer next year.
I'm studying International Relations and I'll be going into second year in September. I joined the society a few weeks into my first semester at uni and have had such a great time being part of it this year! I was a complete beginner when I joined but ended up competing in Blackpool in February and was hoping to do the other competitions before they were cancelled. I can't wait to get back to dancing and be able to help on the board. If you're wondering whether to try a class, do it! Everyone is so friendly and there's a really nice mixture of levels too so everyone's welcome!
Look forward to seeing you all again when we can!

Leigh Buist - PR and Events Coordinator
Hello! I’m Leigh, and I’m the PR and Events coordinator for GUBLDS. I’m a third year maths student at Strathclyde university but joined the society at Glasgow uni in 2018 as Strathclyde doesn’t have a ballroom and Latin society. I started competing at the start of 2019 and have loved every second of it. As PR and Events coordinator I would like to get everyone more involved and give them the opportunity to socialise outside class times.
